GRAIN ROT Multiplayer Guide: Co-op, Lobbies and Invites

Learn how Grain Rot multiplayer works: public server browser, friend invites, lobby privacy, password-protected servers, player limits, and matchmaking facts.

Current-version evidence boundary

Patch 1.08 adds password-server filters and persistent bans. Sources checked through 1.09 still publish no numeric player cap or automatic matchmaking queue.

Yes, GRAIN ROT supports online co-op. One player hosts, while others can join through Steam invites, the friends list, or—since Patch 1.07—a public server browser. Public server discovery is not the same as an automatic matchmaking queue: players choose a listed server rather than the game silently assembling a group. Every participant needs a copy.

How many people can play together is less definite. The official launch FAQ says GRAIN ROT is balanced and best played with around four players, but it does not publish a hard maximum. “Around four” is a recommendation, not a four-player cap. If you would rather descend alone, see the GRAIN ROT solo guide.

QuestionCurrent evidence-safe answer
Does it support online co-op?Yes. One player hosts a Steam lobby or server.
How many players can join?Around four is the developer's recommended group size; no numeric hard cap is published.
Is there a max-player-count setting?Yes. Patch 1.04 added one, but its numeric range and default are not published.
How do friends join?Through Steam invitations or the Steam friends list; Patch 1.07 broadened friends-only and invite-only access.
Can strangers find a server?Yes. Patch 1.07 added public servers to the in-game server browser.
Are password-protected servers supported?Yes. Patch 1.07 added them; Patch 1.08 added a password-server search filter and icon.
Does automatic matchmaking exist? No automatic matchmaking queue is documented. Public server browsing is manual discovery, not proof of queue-based matching.

Patch 1.04 added lobby-privacy and max-player-count settings. The official note does not publish the setting’s allowed values, default, or absolute system limit, so it does not establish a numeric hard cap.

Patch 1.07 added public server browsing, password-protected servers, more host settings, and broader joining for friends-only and invite-only sessions. It did not publish a numeric player limit or describe an automatic matchmaking queue.

How GRAIN ROT co-op works

GRAIN ROT is a cooperative extraction game built around a shared risk-and-reward loop. Your crew takes a cursed elevator into shifting underground ruins, searches for loot, and decides how far to push before returning. Furniture can be broken down for resources or sent through the Grinder for gold. Anything successfully hauled home contributes to rebuilding the Outpost and strengthening future descents.

The cooperative part is deliberately messy. Wooden bodies can splinter, collapse, and catch fire, while physics interactions let players help—or interfere with—one another. Steam’s description even highlights launching an ally’s Spark out of its vessel. That chaos is intentional, but the underlying objective remains cooperative: get useful loot back before the whole crew is lost.

GRAIN ROT max players, player limit, and lobby size

The most accurate answer is that no official hard cap has been published. According to the developer’s current FAQ, the game supports as many survivors as the players’ setups can handle, while being balanced and best played with around four.

The game now includes a max-player-count setting, as documented in Patch 1.04. Its numeric options and absolute limit are not published. That wording should not be converted into either “four players maximum” or “unlimited players.” It gives a recommended group size without promising how larger lobbies will perform.

For a typical group, around four is the officially recommended target. Performance and stability for larger parties remain unverified and may depend on the host, clients, network, and hardware.

How to host and invite friends

GRAIN ROT uses player-hosted Steam lobbies. The official sources confirm the connection method, although they do not document every menu label:

  1. Each player launches a separate Steam copy of GRAIN ROT.
  2. One person acts as the lobby host.
  3. The host sends Steam invitations, or friends join through their Steam friends list.
  4. Confirm everyone has connected before beginning the descent.

Patch 1.04 added lobby-privacy controls. Patch 1.05 then fixed an issue that prevented friends from joining when lobby privacy was set to friends. These notes confirm the privacy controls and that specific fix; they do not document every privacy value, its default, exact UI capitalization, or a broader matchmaking change.

Patch 1.06 added security measures for incoming connections. The note does not describe a numeric lobby cap, player-facing invite or privacy changes, public matchmaking, or network transport, so it supports no broader feature claim here.

Patch 1.07 changed the launch boundary. Public servers are now available through the in-game server browser, and hosts can use password-protected servers. Friends-only and invite-only settings now allow friends of anyone already in the server to join, rather than limiting that access to friends of the host.

Patch 1.08 added a password-server search filter and icon, improved password-server security, and made player bans persist between sessions. It also introduced per-player grief protection, which can be switched off and limits potentially harmful actions outside the Deep Layers. The note does not give every protected action or a verified button-by-button setup path.

This is manual server discovery, not evidence of an automatic matchmaking queue. A complete privacy-value list, dedicated servers, host migration, crossplay, and every join-in-progress edge case remain undocumented. Players can also use the Looking for Group area in the official GRAIN ROT Discord.

What happens when a vessel breaks?

A broken vessel does not necessarily remove a player from the run. The Living Spark escapes and can remain with the crew while looking for another vessel to possess. Our vessels guide explains the confirmed possession framework, while Spark abilities tracks which bodyless and host-related details are actually verified.

The group-wide failure rule is clearer: if the entire crew is lost before extracting, loot that has not reached the Outpost is lost. Progress and resources secured during earlier successful runs remain safe.

This makes replacement vessels and extraction decisions team concerns. A player in Spark form is not best described as receiving a conventional revive. The confirmed loop is that the Spark searches for another host before fading.

Evidence-based co-op priorities

Practical inference from confirmed systems, not hidden rules
  • Agree on when the group will extract. Pushing deeper increases exposure to the Rot, while a full crew loss sacrifices unsecured loot.
  • Tell teammates when a vessel breaks and when a possible replacement host is nearby.
  • Track the group’s noise and movement. Official material says Corrupted vessels react to both.
  • Treat physics-based trolling as a risk decision. Launching a friend’s Spark while carrying valuable loot raises the chance of a full wipe.
  • Bank useful resources and invest in the Outpost instead of treating every descent as an all-or-nothing run.

For the connected uncertainty around corruption and mutation, use the Rot Sickness evidence guide. Cooperative play alone does not prove that the Rot spreads between players.

Frequently asked questions

Is GRAIN ROT multiplayer?

Yes. Steam lists Online Co-op, and the developer documents player-hosted Steam lobbies.

How many players can play GRAIN ROT together?

The game is balanced and best played with around four players. It now has a max-player-count setting, but the developer has not published that setting’s numeric options or an absolute hard maximum. A four-player cap is not currently an evidence-safe claim.

How do I invite friends to a GRAIN ROT lobby?

One player hosts, then sends Steam invitations or lets friends join through the Steam friends list. Patch 1.07 also allows friends of anyone already in a friends-only or invite-only server to join; exact menu labels can change, so this guide does not invent a button-by-button path.

Does every player need a copy?

Yes. The official FAQ says each player needs a separate copy.

Does GRAIN ROT have public matchmaking?

Patch 1.07 added public servers to the in-game server browser, so players can discover and choose a public session. No official source reviewed describes an automatic matchmaking queue; public server browsing and queue-based matchmaking are different features.

Does GRAIN ROT use dedicated servers?

The developer documents player-hosted sessions and a public server browser but does not document dedicated servers or host migration.

Can GRAIN ROT be played solo?

Yes. Single-player is officially supported, although the developer says exploring alone is generally more demanding than bringing a crew. Read the solo guide for the confirmed boundaries.
