Vessels are the fragile wooden bodies inhabited by GRAIN ROT’s Living Sparks. They can splinter, collapse, or catch fire, but losing one does not necessarily remove its player from the expedition. The Spark escapes, remains in the run, and can search for another host. According to the official store, that new host brings a new set of abilities.
What official sources do not provide is equally important: there is no complete public vessel roster, vessel count, stat table, unlock list, or trustworthy tier ranking. This guide explains the verified vessel lifecycle without copying unsupported lists from pre-launch wikis. For bodyless play, see the Spark Abilities guide.
Current Steam page, launch announcement, and direct developer statements checked August 10, 2026What is a vessel?
A vessel is the physical body used by a Living Spark. The store consistently describes these vessels as wooden and fragile, with three directly named failure behaviors: they can splinter, collapse, and catch fire.
The Spark and vessel should not be treated as two names for the same thing. The Spark persists when the vessel breaks, while the body is replaceable. Beck & Branch co-founder Michel Strömbeck describes the player as a Living Spark jumping between fragile wooden vessels, reinforcing that separation. Read the developer announcement.
Official sources do not publish standard vessel health, armor, speed, carrying capacity, or fire-resistance values. Describing a vessel as fragile is supported; assigning it numerical durability is not.
What happens when a vessel breaks?
The confirmed lifecycle is:
- A Living Spark inhabits a wooden vessel.
- Damage, collapse, or fire can break that vessel.
- The Spark escapes instead of disappearing immediately.
- The Spark remains in the expedition and searches for another host.
- Entering the new host returns the player to embodied play with a new set of abilities.
- A Spark that does not find a host can fade completely.
The store also states that if everyone breaks, the group’s loot is lost. It does not publish every exception, recovery window, or distinction between a broken vessel and a fully faded Spark.
That makes body loss an individual recovery problem and a team-wide extraction risk. For crew structure and shared failure, see the GRAIN ROT multiplayer guide. Solo players should use the solo guide, because public sources do not explain whether replacement-host availability or fading behaves differently without teammates.
How does vessel possession work?
Possession is an official feature. The current Steam page says players can possess and swap between fragile wooden vessels, while the narrative description says a Spark searches for another host before fading.
That confirms the general process but not its controls or restrictions. Official material does not say:
- whether an intact vessel can be left voluntarily at any moment;
- whether possession requires a prompt, channel time, item, or resource;
- whether swapping has a cooldown;
- whether vessels belong to particular players;
- whether teammates can freely exchange bodies;
- whether every encountered vessel is an eligible host.
The store says players can accidentally or deliberately launch an ally’s Spark out of its vessel. That confirms forced ejection through player interaction, but it is not enough evidence for a general body-stealing rule.
Do different vessels have different abilities?
The strongest current official wording says that after losing a vessel, the Spark can find another host with a new set of abilities. It is therefore safe to say that changing hosts can change the abilities available to the player.
It is not safe to turn that sentence into a detailed class system. Public sources do not identify named vessel classes, a fixed number of active or passive abilities, rarity tiers, exact values, or a best vessel.
The official July announcement separately listed Spark Abilities as launch content. The exact relationship between persistent Spark options and host-provided abilities remains unclear in public documentation.
Can you extract vessels?
The official July 14 announcement listed the ability to extract treasures, items, and vessels in the elevator as launch content.
That supports one narrow claim: vessels can be among the things taken out through the elevator. It does not explain what happens afterward. There is currently insufficient primary evidence to say that an extracted vessel becomes permanently unlocked, enters storage, can be selected at the start of every future run, can be repaired or upgraded, retains corruption, or expands a collection counter.
Until an official manual, patch note, or verified current-build record documents that system, extractable should not be rewritten as permanently unlocked.
How are vessels related to Rot and mutation?
The deeper the crew travels, the worse the Rot becomes. The official store says bodies warp, voices distort, and emotes become stranger. Its feature list also names body-corruption and mutation systems.
These statements establish that vessels or embodied characters can visibly change under the Rot. They do not establish exact stat effects, mutation stages, thresholds, cleansing rules, or ability modifications.
The Deep Layers also contain hostile Corrupted vessels that react to sound, movement, and one another. The word vessel does not prove that these enemies are valid player hosts. Treat Corrupted-host possession as unverified unless the live game or a future official source confirms it. See the Rot Sickness guide for the current corruption evidence boundary.
Why is there no complete vessel list here?
GRAIN ROT launched on August 7, 2026, and its public primary sources currently explain the vessel concept rather than publishing a database.
The earlier official demo page said the demo included vessels to possess, but it gave no vessel count. Its “20+” figure referred to unlockable constructs—not vessels. The demo’s biome and enemy counts are also pre-release figures, not a full-game body roster.
Unofficial sites that convert those numbers into vessel counts, complete skill lists, or rankings are not reliable enough to reproduce. A useful list requires direct verification of the current launch build and version tracking after balance patches.
Frequently asked questions
How many vessels are in GRAIN ROT?
No current official public source gives a complete count. The demo’s “20+” number describes constructs, not vessels.
What is the best vessel?
There is not enough verified current data for an evidence-based tier list. A replacement host can provide a new set of abilities, but official sources do not publish comparative stats.
Can you possess Corrupted vessels?
The game contains both possessable vessels and hostile Corrupted vessels. Official public material does not confirm that every Corrupted enemy can become a player host.
Do you lose your loot when one vessel breaks?
A single broken vessel does not necessarily end the run because its Spark can seek another host. The official store says loot is lost if everyone breaks.
Does extracting a vessel unlock it permanently?
Official launch material says vessels can be extracted in the elevator. It does not say that extraction permanently unlocks, stores, or repairs them.
